Location
Towards the south of Urumqi City, the Nanshan Pasture is located on Kelawucheng Mountain, a branch of Heavenly Mountain. There are numerous valleys in the pasture. It is cool here in the summer, and is a good place to get away from the heat.

Cultural Background
The Nanshan Pasture is a natural paradise, with scenery and surroundings similar to that at Heaven Lake. This area, 75 km south of Urumqi city, is located at the base of the Tianshan Mountain range. This is a great land for hiking, with gushing valleys and waterfalls falling down the hillsides and the ginseng herb growing on the hillside. The Kasakh people like to spend their summers here and travelers can take a horseback tour with a Kasakh guide, climb the mountains or stay in a traditional yurt. The most interesting thing for tourists here is to visit the local herdsman's families of Kazakh nationality. When you arrive at the yurt, you are warmly welcomed by enthusiastic herdsman. Entering the room, elders are seated on the seats of honor. When guests are all seated, the host immediately offers tea with milk and fruits.

All around are sheer mountains and large flocks of birds and herds of animals. At the end of Baiyanggou, there is a natural bluff. A waterfall of 2 m wide and 40 m long falls from the bluff, forming rainbows and mist. In the woods nearby live Kazakhstan herdsmen and their distinctive felt houses.

Attractions
The pasture below Southern Mountain is quite extensive. Looking north from the pasture, the west to east panorama includes these highpoints: West Baiyanggou, Juhuatai, East Baiyanggou, Mount Zhaobi, Miaoergou and Daxigou. West Baiyanggou is part of the north spur ridge of Mount Kalawucheng and the north aspect of Mount Tianshan.

Springs flowing in the deep valleys, horses running across the green fields and you can see livestock scattered here and there. This is a natural pasture. Besides the animal husbandry, the pasture also has great many tourist attractions. The White Willow Ditch is very cool with dense forests. There’re 40 m high and 2 m wide waterfall that flows from the top of the mountain, whichl makes a great deal of mist. Being a tourist, you may be interested in this view: when the sun is above the waterfall it creates a rainbow.
