History
In 1625, Shenyang became Shenjing, the new capital city of Manchuria. Nuerhachi built his imperial palace here and the Yongling Tomb where he is buried. His son is also buried in the city in Dongling's Zhouling tomb, these being the first two imperial tombs of the Qing dynasty of China. The imperial palace and the two tombs are all listed by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites. Shenyang serves as an important transport and industrial hub for the region. It was in Shenyang that the Russian army was defeated by the Japanese in 1905. It was also here, on September 18th, 1931 that the Mukden incident ignited a war between China and Japan that would see the Japanese occupation of all of Northeast China. This city was also the home to the warlord Zhang Zuolin and his son Zhang Xueliang who ruled over the Northeast during the 1920's. The later 20th century saw Shenyang develop as a major industrial centre. Today the city is rapidly modernising with large scale construction throughout.

Shenyang is located in the southern part of Northeast China, in the center of Liaoning Province, 122°25'-123°48' E and 41°11'-43°2' N. Situated in the inland area of Liaodong Peninsula. Shenyang is north of the BohaiSea and southwest of the ChangbaiMountains.Shenyang covers an area of 185 sq km. Having 1 city, 9 districts and 3 counties under its jurisdiction,Shenyang's total area is 12,980 sq km, the site area of which extends 115 km from east to west and 205 km from south to north. Shenyang's total population is 6.67million, with 5.68 million living in urban areas.

With mainly flat land, the topography of Shenyang is characterized by plains. Located in the temperate zone, Shenyang has a semi-moist continental monsoon climate, with four clearly-defined seasons.
