Nyingchi

Nyingchi means "the Grand Seat of the Sun?? in the language of Tibetan, is one of the 7 prefecture area of Tibet Autonomous Region. It is lying in the southeast of Tibet, the lower reaches of the Yaluzangbu River, with the Sichuan-Tibet highway running through the whole region from east to west.

Nyingchi County, named in ancient times as Gongbo, has a long history that can be traced to

Tibet

's prehistoric period. In the 1970s, human bones and a tomb group from the Neolithic period were unearthed near the NyangRiver. The earliest record of the history of Nyingchi can be found in the inscription on the Demo Stone Board in Gongbo, which is near Guanqug Yumzoinzin of the Moinri area in NyingchiCounty, facing southwest. With a 1,200-year history, the inscription is still clear.

Tibet

was liberated in 1951, and underwent a democratic reform in 1959. In January 1960, Tagung Prefectural Commissioner's Office was set up, and was renamed Nyingchi Prefectural Commissioner's Office in February 1960. In October 1963 was abolished and BomeCounty was incorporated into QamdoPrefecture, while the four counties of Nyingchi, Gongbo'gyamda, Mainling and Medog were put under the jurisdiction of Lhasa. On February 1, 1986, the administrative office of NyingchiPrefecture was officially resumed, governing seven counties -- Nyingchi, Mainling, Gongbo'gyamda, Medog, Bome, Zaya and Nang, including 55 towns and 614 villages.

The topography of Nyingchi is highly undulating with the average latitude of 3,000 meters and the lowest place- Bacuoka is only 150 meters above the sea level.

Climate

Its climate is basically mild and pleasant for the whole year, which creates a desirable environment for both farming and animal husbandry and thus its nickname “the Tibetan Jiangnan”.

Nyingchi is rich of tourist resources. In addition to its grand religious attractions, the natural beauty of Nyingchi is also highly appreciated by tourists. The major natural scenic attractions include the Nanjiabawa Peak, the Yarlung Zangbo GreatCanyon, located in Medog County, which attracts significant tourism and geo-scientific and biological study to the area, BasumLake, Zayu and Bome etc.

. Being called 'HeavenRiver', it is the mother river of the Tibetan people who have created the brilliant Tibetan culture.

BaksumTso Lake. Covering an area of 6,400 acres, the lake is like a crescent in shape. Located in the valley, the water is rather clean and clear. Admiring the reflection of the snow mountain in the water is quite fantastic. A little smaller than the BaksumTsoLake, the YigongLake has a lower elevation and is reputed for its well-preserved ecology.
