AberdeenBay is at the south tip of Hong KongIsland. There is also a lovely CountryPark here on the Aberdeen Reservoir Road. AberdeenBay maintains the characteristics of the traditional fishing village it was in the 1800s. It was once famous for its Chinese junks and the floating restaurants and the house boats where the fishermen lived. But since a fire catastrophe some years ago the "floating" restaurants do not float any more but rest on concrete pillars in the area. These still serve good dim sums, a category of Chinese snack food that includes all kinds of dumplings and won tons as well as fried spring rolls or fried chicken claws. Although many of people today have moved on and up into high rise apartments, and there are fewer boats in the harbor than previously, it is still a picturesque and photogenic place worth a visit.
Fishing boats ranging from the traditional Chinese sailing boats to luxuriously furnished modern ships fill the bay. Visitors can catch a glimpse of the boat dwellers who live in AberdeenBay, and see their sampans scuttling to and fro. To enjoy this lively and bustling scene, take a 30 minute boat trip through the harbor or, for a negotiated fee, a sampan operator (these are mostly elderly ladies) will take you speedily through the harbor. The famous Jumbo Floating Restaurant and the Tai Bak (Tai Bei) Seafood Boat are located at AberdeenHarbor. Visitors can enjoy free travel by ferry boat to the restaurants to sample the delicious seafood available.
