Beijing Overview

Geography
Beijing is the capital city of China and is located on the northern China plain. The city is surrounded by mountains to the north, northwest and west. The western region is located in the Xishan Mountains. The famous Great Wall of China stretches across the north of Beijing. The main rivers are the Yongding River and the Chaobai River.
 
Economy
The biggest industries of Beijing are real estate and automobiles. The majority of the country’s GDP is earned from these two industries. The major industrial area of Beijing is Shijingshan in the west. Agriculture also plays an important role in Beijing's economy. Besides other vegetables, wheat and maize are the main crops grown here.
 
History
The history of Beijing dates back to more than 3,000 years. Beijing was the capital city for a long period of time starting from the Eastern Zhou Dynasty until the Warring States Period. The state was then ruled by dukes. Beijing was known as Jiuzhou under the Liao Dynasty (907-1125). The Republic of China designated Beijing as the Beiping Special Municipality in 1928. On 27th September, 1949, Beiping was renamed as Beijing by Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference when People's Republic of China was born.
 
Transportation System
Beijing is very well connected by rail. The two most important railway stations of Beijing are: Beijing Railway station and Beijing West Railway Station. Beijing Capital International Airport is located at a distance of 20 km northeast of the city. There are five other domestic airports in the city. The city is connected by air to all the major cities of the world. To explore the city, underground rail services, buses, taxis, and bicycles are available.
 
Administration and Government
Beijing is the capital of the People's Republic of China. It is China's political and cultural hub. The representatives of the Beijing Municipality are chosen by direct election.
 
Society & Cultural Life
The very colorful and vibrant Chinese culture is famous all over the world. Beijing opera, locally known as Jingju, is an exhibition of song, spoken dialogue with action sequences, like fighting and acrobatics. Beijing is also famous for its Siheyuan architecture.
 
Educational Institutions
There are several colleges and universities in Beijing. Peking University and Tsinghua University, the two most prestigious universities of China, are located in Beijing. The study centers of Beijing are visited by many foreign students from all over the world.
